BKSK Interiors & Lenox Hill Neighborhood House Gala

Welcome Aboard. Each spring, several dozen interior designers embark on a challenge in the name of a good cause: the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House (the foundation provides resources and programming to New Yorkers in need). Given nothing but a 10-top round table and the theme “Make a Splash” for inspiration, over 40 designers whipped up festive scenes that ranged from the whimsical to the formal, floral to newsprint-clad. We are proud to support such a worthy cause.

The beginning of the Ende era

gerryende_b&w

BKSK is entering into a new era of interior design, through the practiced eye of recently promoted Director of Interior Design, Gerry Ende.

Gerry [gair-ee] joined the BKSK team in 2011, bringing with him nearly 20 years of experience from other top NYC design firms. His portfolio features a wide breadth of inspired design across project types, scales, and styles, including institutional, high-end residential, multi-family, corporate, retail and healthcare. Gerry is known for creating sophisticated interiors that reflect the individuality of our clients’ needs. His vision for space and ability to craft aesthetically unique environments that speak to beauty, form and function will be the guiding principles through which we approach future work. Read More

New Residences in Greenwich Village Historic District

175 10th street upload

The New York Times recently featured BKSK’s new full-floor residences currently under construction at 175 West 10th street. Located in the Greenwich Village Historic District at the intersection of Seventh Avenue South and West 10th Street, the building is a reflection and homage to the unique triangular site upon which it sits. Approved by the LPC in 2014, the design is intended to be new and contemporary, while simultaneously referential to the wonderful character and materials of the Village. BKSK designed the interior spaces as well – to view more of our interior department’s portfolio visit here.

Interiors & Sources highlights new Center for Fiction project

BKSK_CFF-in-IS-main_700

“History is the fiction we invent to persuade ourselves that events are knowable and that life has order and direction.” In his coverage of our recently kicked off project for the Center for Fiction, Interiors & Sources’ Christopher Curtland invokes Bill Watterson’s Calvin (of the famous series ‘Calvin and Hobbes’). Curtland continues by sharing that BKSK Architects will be providing another kind of “order and direction” for the Center for Fiction, an organization that is preparing to relocate from midtown Manhattan to the growing Downtown Brooklyn Cultural District.

More specifically, we will be leading the design and interior buildout of the Center’s new headquarters at 280 Ashland Place. The team looks forward to playing a key role in the Center’s evolution into a Brooklyn-based institution, using the headquarters’ design as a vehicle for building a richer community of fiction lovers.

Interior Design counts 2 Lafayette as one of “New York’s finest”

IMG_5659_700

The recently completed 2 Lafayette Street is included in this month’s Interior Design magazine, an issue charmingly titled “New York’s finest.” The article showcases seven renovated and re-imagined floors in the historic city-owned building, which now serve as work space for the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the Department for the Aging (DFTA).

Through a design approach that embraced yet transcended the guidelines of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) and the Design Excellence program of the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), our team delivered a comfortable and community-centered workplace of exceptional quality. As Interior Design writes, “[t]he New York City Department of Design and Construction’s Design Excellence program continues to churn out, well, excellent projects.” We’re very happy to have partnered with DDC on this project, and applaud them (and Interior Design) for having so much DDC work included in this month’s issue.

Check out the article about 2 Lafayette and its accompanying slideshow on the Interior Design website, and learn more about the project right here on ours.

Inhabitat highlights Citizen and its support of green lifestyles

BKSK_Citizen_JacobSnavely-01_700

Just last month, Citizen became the latest project in our portfolio to achieve LEED certification. Inhabitat was quick to pick up the news, sharing the milestone in a piece titled “Chelsea condo strikes LEED Gold for its emphasis on healthy living and indoor air quality.”

The project’s LEED Gold rating acknowledges the design’s accomplishments in areas such as reduced energy usage and improved indoor air quality. For example, the use of MERV-13 level filtration ensures significant reduction in building users’ exposure to air pollutants. Among the project’s other sustainable characteristics are abundant access to natural light, low flow fixtures, and bicycle storage for all tenants. To quote Inhabitat, “[e]very design detail of the Citizen, from its exterior envelope to its carefully placed entries and janitorial spaces, ensures a green lifestyle.”

The Architect’s Newspaper features 2 Lafayette Street

08_2LAF-DFTA-creditJeffreyTotaro_403_700

In the latest issue of The Architect’s Newspaper, Managing Editor Nicole Anderson takes a close look at BKSK’s recently completed design for 2 Lafayette Street. The offices serve “two very critical, yet different New York City agencies,” and despite the inherent complexities of having a variety of stakeholders, our team was able to breathe much-needed fresh air into seven floors of the historic city-owned building.

Dynamic connecting stairs, commanding city views in both individual and common spaces, bold graphics that celebrate each agency’s mission, and increased thermal, visual, and ergonomic comfort are just a few of the features that make this an appealing, community-centered workplace. In Anderson’s words: “with the building’s views of Manhattan’s stately Civic Center and an interesting floor plan, the firm saw opportunity to transform the bleak interiors into a light-infused workspace that facilitated collaboration and connectivity.”
