We Po-st. Coined by the scholar Edward de Bono, the word “po” is a way to signal during a brainstorming session that what is to follow is not nonsense but rather a provocative operation.

Reasons to Love NY (& BKSK)

This past week, our newly-completed 529 Broadway was featured as #32 in New York Magazine‘s Reasons to Love New York. We have to say, we’re pretty excited about it, too.

overview

529 Broadway is situated at the northwest corner of Broadway and Spring Street in Manhattan, one the most trafficked intersections in the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District. Tourists and locals both frequent the neighborhood for its architectural charm and large retail attractions. The two-story taxpayer building that most recently occupied this corner was one of the few substantial gaps in the street wall of lower Broadway. Recently-completed, 529 Broadway is six stories tall at the street wall, with a gross square footage of approximately 52,000. Read More

Silver and Gold for The Jefferson

Design100Award image uploadThe Jefferson was selected as a Silver Winner in the 2016 New York Design 100 Awards program, which recognizes design excellence in the New York City market. The 115,000-sf multi-family project in New York’s East Village received LEED Gold Certification earlier this year for its unique and holistic approach to sustainable design in an urban setting. This project is considered a successful model of an “urban steward project” as a result of responsible civic and environmental design.

Park House receives 2016 AIANY COTE Award

BKSK is both humbled and honored to have  been selected as a recipient of a 2016 AIANY COTE Merit Award for our LEED Platinum Washington Square Park House. The New York Chapter of AIA’s Committee on the Environment established its award program in 2014, seeking to reward design excellence and innovation that achieves socially and environmentally responsible design. The program is based on a rigorous set of qualitative and quantitative criteria – from community engagement, to human comfort & wellness, to specific sustainability metrics for water, energy, and materials.

Award-winning Parks + Playgrounds

SARA National image upload

BKSK has a passion for implementing design excellence in public spaces, in particular parks and playgrounds. From the Kidpower! Playground and Preschool Garden for the New York Hall of Science, to a series of comfort stations across the NYC boroughs for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, to the Minnewaska State Park Visitor’s Center, these projects are carefully designed with sensitivity to the visitors, site, community, and environment.

We are proud to announce that two such BKSK projects were among the honorees of the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) 2016 Celebration of Architecture and Design Program. Washington Square Park House received a Design Award of Excellence, and Battery PlayScape received a Design Award of Honor. Congratulations to the project teams!

CCNY Women in Design: Career Night at BKSK

Last week, students from the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at City College joined us at BKSK for a discussion about the presence and influence of women in design and architecture. The conversation was facilitated by Julie Nelson, Joan Krevlin, Jennifer Preston and several other staff members who shared stories about their career trajectory, their inspiration, challenges and just some good practical advice for students with real questions about their future in the profession. The conversation evolved into an open dialogue where students and staff alike opened up for an exchange of knowledge and insight both in the aspirational and practical sense.

For information about future Career Nights at BKSK, please email bkskinfo@bksk.com.
